The Saint Andrews Prayer Shawl Ministry was started in Jan. 2006, by Betty Marshall and was based on a book written by a woman who had started the ministry to comfort women with breast cancer and mothers of newborns. During the years since, we have grown considerably. These wonderful ladies donate the yarn for each shawl and the shawls are knitted or crocheted mostly at home on their own time. We meet twice a month and generally have somewhere between 8 and 12 ladies attending.
The shawls are given to anyone needing comfort during times of grief, illness or any major stress in people’s lives. We also make small prayer squares which we donate to the USO, the Raleigh Police Dept. and also to the nurses in the NICU at Wake Med. We certainly don’t expect thank you notes, but we have received so many that bring tears to our eyes as we read them together. And we love every one of them! Occasionally we receive a donation from a recipient which is used to buy mailing envelopes and to periodically mail shawls.
Over the 18 years of the ministry’s existence, these wonderful ladies have made 733 shawls as of last month and close to 500 squares over the last three years! They are prayed over at the end of our get-togethers, and again in church once a month. We hope that the recipients get as much pleasure and comfort from receiving them as we get from making them! If you’d like to join this ministry, or learn more about it, call the church office 919-847-1913 and we’ll connect you with the group.
