The gospel according to John has over the centuries been misused to justify and promote anti-semitism (everything from anti-Jewish feelings to out right persecution). John’s refers to “the Jews” but he means the Pharisees, the Jewish religious leadership of the time, who opposed Jesus. His gospel was written around 100 AD when Jewish-Christians were finally “wearing out their welcome” in the synagogue and a “family feud” was heating up amongst followers of Christ and their Jewish family members.
New Testament professor Amy-Jill Levine offers her perspective in “A Jewish Take on Jesus” an insightful and very interesting article that I recommend. It comes from a Catholic publication so if you read it you will learn more about our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters also.
